Al is the board chair of the Swifty Foundation, a public charity started because of the death of his son Michael from medulloblastoma in 2013 at age 15. Michael chose to donate his postmortem tissue for research to help future children who are diagnosed with brain cancer.

Following Michael’s lead, Swifty started Gift from a Child program with the goal of giving all families the option to donate their child’s PM tissue to research. Al also serves on several boards including the Institute of Bioethics at St. Joseph University, Career Transitions Center of Chicago and is on the Executive Council of the Children’s Brain Tumor Network
