Dr. Korones obtained his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1983 and started his career at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 1983. Dr. Korones is board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He currently directs the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program and is the founder and director of the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Dr. Korones oversees The Bright Eyes Fund, which broadens the scope of brain tumor research and treatment options in Rochester and works to improve the lives of children with brain tumors throughout their treatment process and beyond. He is also a physician consultant at CompassionNet, a community-based pediatric palliative care program.

He is active locally, nationally and internationally, serving locally on the Board of Directors of Camp Good Days and DayStar, and nationally on the Editorial Board of the Art of Oncology for Journal of Clinical Oncology, Section Editor for “On Children Blood and Cancer” for the journal Pediatric Blood and Cancer, and on the Data Safety Monitoring and Review Board at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He also serves on the Medical Advisory Board for the Aslan Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to developing pediatric oncology services in lower income countries, and in that capacity travels to Ethiopia annually, caring for children with cancer there, teaching fellows, and assisting with program development.

His research interests include conducting trials for children and adults with brain tumors, and improving the quality of life for patients struggling with chronic and/or life-threatening illnesses. He has written extensively, including essays on clinical challenges in medicine, appearing in JAMA, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of Palliative Medicine and the New England Journal.
